Yankton, South Dakota

Yankton is a city in, and the county seat of, Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 14,454 at the 2010 census. Yankton is the principal city of the Yankton Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the entirety of Yankton County, and which had an estimated population of 22,702 as of July 1, 2015.[9] Yankton was the first capital of Dakota Territory. It is named for the Yankton tribe of Nakota (Sioux) Native Americans; Yankton is derived from the Nakota word I-hank-ton-wan ("the end village").[10]

Yankton is located on the Missouri River just downstream of the Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake and just upstream of the confluence with the James River. The United States National Park Service's headquarters for the Missouri National Recreational River are located in the city. The Human Services Center was established as a psychiatric hospital in 1882 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yankton is commonly referred to as the "River City",[11] due to its proximity to the Missouri River and the importance that the river played in the city's settlement and development. Yankton has also earned the nickname, "Mother City of the Dakotas", due to the early important role it played in the creation and development of the Dakota Territory, which later became the 39th and 40th U.S. states of North and South Dakota, respectively.[12]

Viborg, South Dakota

Founded by Danish-Americans, the city is named after the Danish city of Viborg.[8] The area was first settled by Danish migrants in the 1860s, founding a community known as Daneville. With the advent of the railway in 1893, a new settlement closer to the railway was created as Viborg. Viborg was incorporated as a city on August 25, 1903.[9]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 782 people, 360 households, and 189 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,955.0 inhabitants per square mile (754.8/km2). There were 429 housing units at an average density of 1,072.5 per square mile (414.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.6% White, 0.8% Native American, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.6% of the population.

There were 360 households of which 21.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 47.5% were non-families. 43.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.98 and the average family size was 2.69.

Whitewood, South Dakota

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 927 people, 374 households, and 232 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,448.4 inhabitants per square mile (559.2/km2). There were 392 housing units at an average density of 612.5 per square mile (236.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.9% White, 0.8% African American, 3.7% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

There were 374 households of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.0% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.05.

The median age in the city was 38.8 years. 26.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.7% were from 25 to 44; 28.8% were from 45 to 64; and 14.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.6% male and 49.4% female.

Volga, South Dakota

Volga was founded by the Western Town Lot Company on December 27, 1879 by Col. Arthur Jacoby. It was originally named "Bandy Town" after the Bandy family, early settlers there. Later, in 1880, the railroad assigned it the name "Volga", after the Volga River, in Russia.[6][7] Volga is talked about in the juvenile novel The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder in the chapter titled "Pa Goes to Volga".

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 1,768 people, 734 households, and 483 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,942.9 inhabitants per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 783 housing units at an average density of 860.4 per square mile (332.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

There were 734 households of which 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.

Willow Lake, South Dakota

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 263 people, 115 households, and 68 families residing in the city. The population density was 710.8 inhabitants per square mile (274.4/km2). There were 129 housing units at an average density of 348.6 per square mile (134.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.0% White, 7.2% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.0% of the population.

There were 115 households of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 40.9% were non-families. 37.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 3.03.

The median age in the city was 42.2 years. 26.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 11.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 14.4% were from 25 to 44; 28.9% were from 45 to 64; and 18.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.6% male and 49.4% female.

Wagner, South Dakota

At the 2010 census,[3] there were 1,566 people, 639 households and 367 families residing in the city. The population density was 767.6 inhabitants per square mile (296.4/km2). There were 726 housing units at an average density of 355.9 per square mile (137.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 54.7% White, 0.2% African American, 40.5% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.

There were 639 households of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 42.6% were non-families. 39.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.20.

The median age was 42.8 years. 27.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.5% were from 25 to 44; 23.3% were from 45 to 64; and 24.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.7% male and 52.3% female.

Wilmot, South Dakota

Wilmot is a city in Roberts County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 492 at the 2010 census. Wilmot, as well as Brookings, SD, were named for Wilmot Brookings, who was provisional governor of the Dakota Territory.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 492 people, 208 households, and 122 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,004.1 inhabitants per square mile (387.7/km2). There were 237 housing units at an average density of 483.7 per square mile (186.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 89.4% White, 7.9% Native American, 0.4% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

There were 208 households of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.3% were non-families. 37.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.93.

Wakonda, South Dakota

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.39 square miles (1.01 km2), all of it land.[2] Corn and soybeans are grown on the farms surrounding the town. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters. Annual precipitation is about 25 inches.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 321 people, 128 households, and 72 families residing in the town. The population density was 823.1 inhabitants per square mile (317.8/km2). There were 163 housing units at an average density of 417.9 per square mile (161.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.4% White, 0.3% African American, and 1.2% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

There were 128 households of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.8% were married couples living together, 1.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.8% were non-families. 40.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 3.03.

Winner, South Dakota

Winner is a city in Tripp County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,897 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tripp County.[7] Winner also serves as the administrative center of neighboring Todd County, which does not have its own county seat.[8] The nearest airport is Winner Regional Airport.

Winner, located in the south central part of the state, features a climate type (Köppen Dfa) often described as a hot summer humid continental climate. Winters average below the −3 °C (26.6 °F) persistent snow line isotherm, and Summers average above 22 °C (72 °F) Köppen hot summer isotherm. The climate features nearly even four seasons, typical of its classification. The all-time high temperature is 112 °F (44 °C), set in 2003 and 1965, and the all-time low temperature is −29 °F (−34 °C), set in 1989.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,897 people, 1,328 households, and 717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,316.8 inhabitants per square mile (508.4/km2). There were 1,547 housing units at an average density of 703.2 per square mile (271.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 82.1% White, 0.2% African American, 14.0% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.

Wakpala, South Dakota

Wakpala is an unincorporated community in Corson County, South Dakota, United States, on the west side of the Missouri River, north-northwest of Mobridge. Although not tracked by the Census Bureau, Wakpala has been assigned the ZIP code of 57658. Wakpala is within the boundaries of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, and its name loosely translates to "creek" in the Lakota language,[3] with Oak Creek running south on its eastern edge.

Chief Gall (Phizi) is buried at Saint Elizabeth Episcopal Cemetery here and Chief Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake) is possibly buried under a concrete bust bearing his name a few miles south of town in the Mobridge area. Sitting Bull was originally buried at Fort Yates, North Dakota but an effort was made to exhume his bones and rebury him at the present site, but some individuals assert that the bones moved are not his.
